Portable GPS Navigation units are a great gift idea and very useful too.

There are several very nice things about these portable GPS units that I really like:
1) They are usually very easy to use.
2) You can take them with you almost anywhere. When you get out of the car, you can use these for hike, bike rides, and even walks around town.
3) They are easier and less expensive to get upgrades and stay up to dates on all the latest map/road changes.

What make this a great gift for dad is that it is ego saving.  We all know how men hate to admit they are lost and will not stop to ask for questions.  This eliminates that situation altogether.  You can preprogram your destination into this for dad, and just have it on in the background.  Then dad can hear the directions and pretend he knows where he is going without letting on that he is using the GPS.  Or, he can turn it on himself and say he just loves to play with cool gadgets.

There are many, I mean tons,  of different GPS units available.  They all tend to offer the same basic features.  There are three main manufacturers: Tom Tom, Magellan, and Garmin.  They are all great.
